The Mountain of God

Oldonyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is an active stratovolcano rising to approximately 2,962 metres above sea level. It stands near Lake Natron in the Gregory Rift and is the only known active volcano that erupts carbonatite lava, making it one of Tanzania’s most unusual geological destinations. Its ascent is steep, demanding, and typically undertaken at night to reach the summit around sunrise.

LIQUID BLACK LAVA FLOWS

Peer inside the active crater to witness unique natrocarbonatite lava bubbling from active volcanic cones (*hornitos*). Moving like dark oil at just 500°C, this rare lava flows black during the daytime, glows an eerie fluid red at night, and quickly cools into ghostly white ash.

45-DEGREE VOLCANIC ASH

Navigate a physically grueling, highly steep ascent up sliding volcanic scree paths. Starting under total darkness at midnight to dodge blistering daytime desert temperatures, your headlamp will illuminate vast, deeply carved ash channels running down the volcano's face.

SUMMIT SUNRISE PANORAMA

Arrive at the active rim just as sunrise hits to witness a spellbinding 360-degree vista of the East African Rift System. You will look down on the marbled pink flats of Lake Natron, the rugged Maasai steps, and the distant peaks of the Ngorongoro Highlands.

THE HORNITO TOWERS

Step onto the active crater floor to stand alongside weird, hollow spires called hornitos, which constantly hiss, sputter, and push out cold, dark natrocarbonatite lava bubbles.
